Abstract: The presence of a church in society can be seen from two perspectives. The first is from theological dimension. Its existence in the World is a logical consequence of a community having expeiences of God through Jesus Chist. Based on the experiences, churches formulate an ideal concept of "ecclesia vita contemplativa." The second is from sociological dimension. Its existence in society is a duplication of the life of Jesus Christ. Hence, churches dedicate themselves for the sake of creating peace, justice, and prosperity in society. This is the concept of "ecclesia vita activa." In the course of the history of the Christian churches, people have compared these dimensions in a disctint level. The concept of "ecclesia vita contemplativa" is comprehended as a spiitual church, while the concept of "ecclesia vita activa" is seen more secular. This article is going to examine empirically those concepts in the historical context of the Christian Church in Central Sulawesi.
