Abstract: Kakula played by Kailinese in Central Sulawesi, is considered the “original” music of Kailinese. This paper argues that Kakula which is usually played in marriage ceremony as a status signifier is an historically constructed and subject to change. The historical construction and the change of this music could be proven by first, the historical context of Kakula as a part of the gong culture spreading in the islands of South East Asia, and secondly, the analysis structure of the music.
