Title: Characterization And Isolation of Vitamin E Isomers From Palm-Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) By UV-Vis, Hplc, and Column Chromatography

Abstract: Naturally, vitamin E comprises of tocopherols and tocotrienols which are groups of soluble lipid compound that composed of eight vitamers: B-, C-, D-, and E-, respectively. In this study, they are detected and analyzed from Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD), a byproduct of deodorization in palm oil refining from Elais guineensis. For characterization and isolation, Column Chromatography with solvent gradient elution, UVVisible Spectrophotometer (UV-Vis), and Normal Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (NP-HPLC) are used. From the findings, there are six vitamin E isomers that are naturally present in this PFAD, namely B-, C-, D-, E- tocotrienols and B-, D-tocopherols. This study also successfully isolated B-tocopherols as the abundant vitamin E isomer in PFAD, with the mean concentration of 376.16 ppm.
