Implementasi Jaringan WDS (Wireless Distribution System) pada Dinas Perhubungan Komunikasi dan Informatika, Kabupaten Boyolali

Abstract

Jaringan nirkabel saat ini merupakan jaringan yang paling banyak digemari oleh para pengguna. Jaringan ini bersifat praktis dan fleksibel sehingga jaringan ini memudahkan para pengguna untuk koneksi internet tanpa menggunakan kabel. Namun beberapa kompleks perkantoran menggunakan jaringan nirkabel ini untuk mendukung jaringan kabel yang sudah ada, dan implementasinya masih menggunakan jaringan kabel yang menjadi backbone dari access point agar klien seperti laptop atau PC dapat terkoneksi internet. Koneksi dengan klien menjadi sukar apabila jaringan dengan kabel diterapkan dilokasi yang tidak mungkin untuk memasang kabel jaringan dan peremajaan kabel. Solusi dari permasalahan tersebut ialah mengimplementasikan Wireless Distribution System (WDS) pada perangkat keras access point Linksys WRT54GL dengan memodifikasi firmware menjadi firmware DD-WRT karena access point ini tidak memiliki fitur WDS. WDS adalah jaringan nirkabel yang dikembangkan menggunakan beberapa access point tanpa harus memerlukan backbone jaringan kabel untuk menghubungkan perangkat – perangkat jaringan komputer. Untuk mengetahui performansi jaringan WDS perlu dilakukan pengukuran. Parameter – parameter yang digunakan dalam melakukan pengukuran adalah throughput, jitter, dan bandwidth.

Wireless network today is a network that is most favored by the users. This network is practical and flexible so that these networks enable users to connect to the Internet without using wires. But some office complex use such a wireless network to support existing wired network, and its implementation is still using a cable network which becomes the backbone of the access point so that clients such as laptops or PCs can be connected to the Internet. The connection to the clients will become difficult when the cable network is applied to a location that is not possible to install and to replace a network cable. The solution to these problems is to implement a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) on an access point hardware-- Linksys WRT54GL, by modifying its firmware into the DD-WRT firmware because the access point does not have WDS features. Wireless Distribution System is a wireless network that was developed using multiple access points without requiring a wired network backbone to connect the computer networking devices. A measurement is needed to find out the WDS network performance. Parameters used in the measurement is throughput, jitter, and bandwidth.
