Title: A Study of Compliment and Compliment Responses Based on Gender Differences in Live! With Kelly and Michael Show

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate how male and female use compliment on “Live! With Kelly and Michael” show. It first explores the most topics of compliment used by male and female and the second is to explore the differences between male and female in responding the compliment. The participants of this study are the hosts of the show, Kelly and Michael, the celebrity guests (male and female) and the audiences. The data collection uses qualitative and quantitative approaches with 4 random videos chosen by the researcher to gather data. The data uses Herbert’s, the categorized of compliment topics Herbert’s (1998) and compliment responses Herbert’s (1986). The study finds that both female and male more frequently chose “performance/ skill/ ability” as the topic of compliment. It also shows that female and male have not many differences in responses the compliment. In addition, the result of this study shows us that in responses of compliment, both of female and male chose to agree or accept the compliment by use “appreciation token” sub-type.
