Abstract: This study aims to investigate causes of students’ speaking anxiety in a rural and an urban school area. A mixed-method was used in the study in order to present both quantitative and qualitative data. This study used a set of questionnaires distributed to thirty participants in an urban school and thirty participants in a rural school area. The participants were asked to choose the causes of their speaking anxiety offered in the questionnaire items according to their personal opinions. The questionnaire items were developed based on the literature used in this study. After that, the quantitative data were presented and then the data were described qualitatively. The result revealed that the major factor of speaking anxiety among students in urban and rural area was the same. Students in an urban and rural school were concern more on pronunciation and grammar. Interestingly, the quantitative data of this study showed that a number of participants were less anxious dealing with classroom settings, activities, and teachers. This study is expected to give contribution for teachers to be aware that speaking anxiety may exist among EFL students, so that they can develop their approaches in speaking class to minimize their students’ anxiety and to give more English exposure for their students.
