Abstract: Rice cultivation practice contributes on increase methane emissions in the atmosphere. Rice varieties is one of factors that cause influence the pattern and magnitude of methane emissions from rice fields. The ability of rice to release methane is influenced by the characteristic physiological and morphological of each varieties. A strategy to reduce methane emission from rice field is using a high yielding variety. This study aimed to obtain the information on rice varieties effectiveness regarding on increasing yield and reducing methane emissions from rice cultivation. The study was conducted on May-August 2018 at Research Station of Indonesian Agriculture Environment Research Institute in Jakenan, Pati District, Central Java Province. The study was arranged in randomized design with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments consist of rice varieties. Four rice varieties were used for this study, namely Ciherang (V1), Inpara 2 (V2), Inpara 5 (V3) and Inpago 8 (V4). The study showed that the total methane emission from four varieties were 110 ; 67; 67; 106 kg/ha/season and the total grain yield were 3.78; 4.33; 5.25; 5.14 ton/harespectively.
