Abstract: This thesis is a study that analyzes the translation procedures used in translation of novel “The Surfer” by Linda Cargil. The translation procedures that I used in this study is the translation procedures from Peter Newmark. The objection of the study is to know what kind of procedure and why are the procedures that used in translating direct speech. Five procedures that used in translating direct speech, they are transportation, modulation, synonym, cultural equivalent, and naturalization. From this study, it explained each procedure that used in translating direct speech, and find a solution that cannot be translated with literal translation.
