An Annotated Translation of The Cultural Words in Hans Christian Andersen’s Short Stories Ole Lukøje The Sandman and What the Moon Saw

Abstract

This thesis is about an annotated translation of the cultural words in Hans Christian Andersen’s short stories titled Ole Lukøje the Sandman and What the Moon Saw. Both of the short stories have different stories on each chapter, and because of that, it makes the stories interesting to read because every chapter there will be new stories. Ole Lukøje the Sandman was first published in 1841 while What the Moon Saw was first published in 1865. The translator choose the two short stories because Hans Christian Andersen has many stories that are not translated into Indonesian yet even though the stories were published long time ago. Because most of the stories’ setting of places are in the Europe, the translator found the difficulties in translating the cultural words because of the cultural differences between the source culture and target culture. Therefore to solve the problems, the translator do the annotation by using transference, additional information within the text, footnotes, generalization, and couplet procedures to translate the cultural words that the translator has found in the short stories.
