Abstract: The regulation that Intermediate Grammar is a compulsory course before taking Academic Writing in the English Language Education program in UKSW has been viewed as an important thing as it can influence future classroom practices. Thus, this study is conducted to investigate the correlation between Intermediate Grammar and Academic Writing in English Language Education in Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana and also to find out the students’ view about how the knowledge they have gained in the Intermediate Grammar course relates to their ability in the Academic Writing course. This study used mixed methods involving correlational and qualitative-descriptive methods. Students’ grades of Intermediate Grammar and Academic Writing from 70 students were used as the data for the correlational study. Meanwhile, the descriptive study was conducted through interviews with eight students that have already passed both Intermediate Grammar course and Academic Writing course. The result of the correlational data showed that there is no significant correlation between Intermediate Grammar and Academic writing. However, the descriptive study showed differently. It was found that the students viewed that knowledge of Intermediate Grammar helps them to deliver the ideas in writing academic papers quite well and improves their writing performance. Besides, the process of writing in the Academic Writing also strengthens students’ memory of Intermediate Grammar.
