Abstract: In the discussion of the EFL setting, one ongoing controversial issue which has been ongoing is whether L1 is required and useful or not in the EFL classroom. Many studies’ opinions were used by researchers to know the perception of students toward the use of L1 in L2 class. Some of them believe that L1 is useful and effective and some of them believe that L1 can be a boomerang for the students. This study aims to analyze students’ perception of their teacher’s L1 use in grammar class. There is one research question discussed in this study “What are the students’ perception toward the teacher’s L1 use in grammar class?” The participants in this study were the students in the English Language Education Program of the Faculty of Language and Arts, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, Salatiga who have taken the Intermediate grammar course. Quantitative method was used in the study by giving the participants a questionnaire for the data collection in this study. The results of this research showed that the participants were agreed for the use of L1 in the grammar class. L1 use can afford their needs in learning L2 because L1 can give them an easy way to learn L2 grammar in the classroom. Nevertheless, it is not recommended when the use of L1 is more often than L2 use in grammar classroom.
