Authors: Sinanu, Frances

Issue Date: 2021
Abstract: Being a multilingual society, it is always interesting to analyze the language choice used by Indonesians on Facebook especially among speakers of different languages and dialects in Indonesia. This report looks at the literacy practice of Facebook users in Indonesia responding to a friend’s status update. The data were collected using a virtual ethnographic approach involving a descriptive qualitative content analysis of one status update and one online interview with the status owner. The analysis was done following the Hallidayan tripartite framework of Field, Tenor, & Mode. The finding may help us to understand how people in a multilingual society communicate online, particularly on how they choose the language and what role does that language play.
