An Analysis of the Translation Strategies Used by Translator in Translating Indonesian Metaphor and Simile in 'Cantik Itu Luka' into English

Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate what translation strategies are used by the translator in translating the Indonesian metaphors into English in the novel Cantik Itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan. The theory of metaphor and simile translation strategies that proposed by Larson are used as the theoretical framework of this research. Moreover, descriptive qualitative is used as the method of data collection in this study. The data were collected by reading and identifying the metaphors and similes found in the novel Cantik Itu Luka and its English translation. Then, the data were classified by identifying and analyzing the strategies used to translate the metaphors and similes in the source text based on Larson’s theory. The result of this study shows that there are three out of five translation strategies applied by the translator in rendering the metaphors, and two of them are used to translate the simile identified in the novel Cantik Itu Luka. The strategy that most used by the translator to translate the metaphors and similes in the novel is translating the metaphor (or simile) by keeping the same image and meaning in the target language to make it sounds natural to the readers in the target culture.
