Abstract: Seam carving method is used to modify digital image size automatically by preserving details of objects in the image. Image size modification is done by seam elimination or seam duplication. The seam carving method can perform better compared to scaling and automatic cropping methods when it is applied to reduce digital image's size without preserving the original aspect ratio. However, its performance is highly dependent on the structure of the image content. In this paper we examine the performance of the seam carving method and show that its performance is worse than scaling and automatic cropping when the structure of the image content is perpendicular to the direction of the seam being removed or duplicated
