Title: Promoting Higher Thinking Skills to Students in Junior High Schools Salatiga

Abstract: This study describes HOTS activities used in English classes. It attempted to answer the research question: “What activities are applied by the teachers to promote higher order thinking skills to the students?”. The participants were 2 English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Salatiga and SMP Negeri 3 Salatiga who applied HOTS in teaching. This study used observation technique to collect data. The teachers were also asked to respond to 6 questions related to HOTS activities they applied and their difficulties in creating HOTS activities. The data analysis shows they used HOTS activities such as; predicting, analyzing, applying, and developing as bases for the activities.
