An Analysis of Shift in Translating Dialogues in A Christmas Carol Into Indonesian by Firdaus Ditya Pamungkas and Into Sebuah Lagu Natal by Ana Karina

Abstract

English literature has many fans all around the world and those fans are in various ages. Those variations of age are not a barrier to enjoy literature, on the other hand the language itself is the barrier especially for those from countries that don’t use English as daily language, for example is Indonesian. That is why literature needs to be translated into Indonesian so Indonesian readers can enjoy it easily. One of the famous literatures that has been translated into Indonesian is A Christmas Carol, a children's literature by Charles Dickens. After going through the translation process, the Indonesian versions of A Christmas Carol translated by Anna Karina (Sebuah Lagu Natal) and Firdaus Ditya Pamungkas are having changes, for examples are changes of grammatical and lexical structure because of translation shift, and there are differences of changes in those versions. Translation shift is firstly introduced by J.C Catford and then redefined by Newmark as changes happening because of the grammatical differences involved in both the English and Indonesian language. By doing close reading and listing, there are data findings found in this qualitative research. Those data showed that both of the Indonesian versions are using more category shift than level shift. Those samples also showed that there are differences in translation shifts happening in both Indonesian versions.
