An Analysis of Taboo Words Translation in Paper Town into Indonesian

Abstract

This research analyzes the taboo words found in Paper Town novel written by John Green. Its aim is to define the types of taboo words in Paper Town novel and to know the translation strategies used by the translator in translating taboo words. This research is qualitative research. The data source is taken from Paper Town novel and its Indonesian translation. The data found in this novel is 94 data. Before knowing the types and strategies in the taboo word, to find out the meaning of the taboo word, using the theory of Keith Allan and Ronald Wardhaugh's theory. To analyze the types of taboo words found using the Allan Burridge theory while analyzing the translation strategy using theories from Mona Baker. Based on the analysis, there only three types that are found namely the body and effluvia (28 data), organs and sex (58 data), and naming and addressing (8 data). Actually, in that type, there are four types but only found three types except for death and disease. The result of the strategies shows that four strategies are applied in the translation of the taboo words. They are translation by more general word (superordinate) (48 data), translation by more neutral word (34 data), Translation by cultural substitution (1 data), translation by omission (1 1 data).
