Abstract: One of the basic aspects of English is mastering the vocabulary. During the English language learning process, learners will face challenges in learning vocabulary. Fortunately, there are vocabulary learning strategies that can help the learners to face the challenges. in the process of learning the vocabulary. Learners need to know the strategies they use for helping them gain vocabulary easier. The main purpose of this study was to describe vocabulary learning strategies used by the students in learning new words. This research employed a mix-method design in order to gather both qualitative and quantitative data. The participants of this study were 50 students from the batch of 2016, 2015, and the oldest batch of English Language Education program at the Faculty of Language and Arts, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana. The data were analysed based on Schmitt’s vocabulary learning strategies which are determination strategy, metacognitive strategy, memory strategy, social strategy, and cognitive strategy. The findings of this study found that the students mostly used determination strategy in learning to understand new vocabularies.
