Abstract: | This study is entitled AN ANNOTATED TRANSLATION OF METAPHORS AND SIMILES IN NOVEL THE THINGS THEY CARRIED BY TIM O’BRIEN. The purposes of this study are (1) “To analyze the strategies used in translating the metaphors and similes from SL (English) into TL (Indonesia)”, and (2) “To give the elaborations why the strategies used and how the strategies is applied”. The Object of this research are three chapters from this novel entitled, (1) The Things They Carried, (2) Love, and (3) Spin. In result, the translator find 5 metaphors and 10 similes from this novel. The translator uses the semantic method in translating the metaphors and simile along with the strategies by Peter Newmark and Larson’s theories. The translator mostly uses the strategy of translation the metaphor by simile to translate the metaphors. The least strategies used by the translator in translating the metaphors are (1) the conversion of metaphor into its sense and (2) the metaphor can be translated as simile along with its sense. In translating similes, the translator mostly uses the strategy of (1) Reproducing the same image in the TL and (2) The simile maybe kept and the meaning explain. |
