The Analysis Categories and Procedures Of Cultural Words in Tiger’s Curse By Colleen Houck

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the cultural words in the Tiger’s Curse novel written by Colleen Houck, published in 2011. The researcher also uses Peter Newmark's theory to analyze the translation procedures used by the translator in translating cultural words from the source text in English into the target text in Indonesian in the Tiger’s Curse novel. This research was conducted using qualitative data methods by comparing the source novel and the target novel with the same title. There are five categories of cultural words: ecology, material culture, social culture, social organization, gestures and habits. According to Newmark, there are several translation procedures: transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, synonym, through-translation, shifts or transpositions, modulation, recognized translation, label translation, compensation, componential analysis, reduction and expansion, paraphrase, couplets, and notes. Based on research conducted on fifteen data taken from the novel Tiger's Curse, there are three categories of cultural words: ecology (flora), material culture (food, clothes, musical instruments, and weapons), and social organization (religious). The translation procedures found to translate the fifteen cultural words are transference, naturalization, and cultural equivalent. The transference translation procedure is the most dominant used procedure by translators.
