”A Day's Wait”: Musik Program Berdasarkan Cerita Pendek Karya Ernest Hemingway

Abstract

Penelitian ini memaparkan tentang bagaimana proses eksperimentasi mengadopsi cerita pendek “A Day‟s Wait” karya Ernest Hemingway menjadi sebuah karya musik program untuk kuartet gesek. Struktur komposisi musik yang digunakan sebagai fondasi diambil dari kazanah musik klasik dan karya sastra cerita pendek. Keseluruhan bagian dalam komposisi tersebut merupakan penggambaran sebuah karya sastra prosa melalui konsep musik program dengan cara menerapkan idiom-idiom musik. Penokohan cerita dalam komposisi musik menggunakan leitmotif. Konsep harmoni tonal juga diadopsi namun penggunaannya diterapkan secara leluasa. Pengalaman dalam penelitian ini memberi wawasan, tantangan dalam menuangkan ide musikal baru dalam komposisi musik program yang bersifat naratif.

This study reports a research project on how the experimental process of composing “A Day‟s Wait”, a short story written by Ernest Hemingway into a music program for string quartet. The structure of the musical compositions used here is based from classical music also the short story‟s literature. The whole parts of the composition depicted the characters and the atmospheres in the short story which applied the musical idioms while preventing the original of the short story‟s concept. The role character in the short story represented with leitmotif. The concept of western tonal harmony also adopted but it is used freely. This research bring experience, enlightment, challange to get new idea for composing a narratively music program.
