The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive explanation of the impact felt by Indonesia with the existence of cultural diplomacy through the organization The Japan Foundation. The research method used is qualitative research with the type of ethnographic research. After the Malari Incident in 1972, The Japan Foundation was established as an independent institution with the hope of changing the image of the Japanese state towards the Indonesian people. The presence of The Japan Foundation in Indonesia has a great influence on the community, especially the presence of a culture that can attract attention through the programs presented. Approach through culture can easily be done as part of carrying out the national interest owned by Japan in Indonesia based on the Fukuda Doctrine policy. In promoting Japanese culture, The Japan Foundation organizes various programs and activities such as the Japanese Film Festival (JFF), Japan Cultural Weeks (JCW), Nihongo Partners Program (NP), and Jakarta-Japan Matsuri (JJM). Although hindered by the Covid-19 pandemic, it did not reduce the interest of young people to participate in every cultural performance activity. Through every program carried out, Japan has succeeded in carrying out cultural diplomacy in Indonesia, seen from Indonesia's position as the number two country in the world which has a number of institutions, teachers, and Japanese language students. The impacts felt by Indonesia include improving relations between Indonesia and Japan, being able to carry out cultural collaboration activities, Indonesian people getting to know and learning about culture in the arts, music, and intellectual fields, and the presence of Japanese animation in Indonesian television broadcasts, Japan being an example of a country in maintaining local culture despite foreign cultures, young Indonesians are fond of Japanese pop culture, and an increasing number of institutions are present in Indonesian society. |
