University Students’ Perceptions on The Use of Asynchronous Online Discussion in an Online Class

Abstract

An asynchronous online discussion (AOD) has become a trend nowadays whether for academic purposes or non-academic purposes. Despite the advantages, an asynchronous online discussion has its drawbacks. Therefore, the researcher is interested to learn about students’ perception in FBS UKSW who have experienced online discussions, especially in content courses, on the use of online discussions. A questionnaire consisting of both close-ended and open-ended questions were used to explore the perceptions of 48 students in the English Language Education Program. To clarify and get more insights on the students’ responses, the researcher interviewed four participants. The results of the study shows that students perceived the benefits by joining the AOD; flexible time and learning pace, opportunities to exchange ideas, feasibility of participating in the AOD, students can increase their confidence in a discussion, and they can understand the topic discussed better. This study concludes that students experience the usefulness of AOD more than the drawbacks. In fact, they also get the drawbacks in joining an asynchronous online discussion.
