An Analysis of Metaphor Translation Strategy in a Novel: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J. K. Rowling

Abstract

Metaphor is one of several kinds of figurative speech. It works by comparing, symbolizing, and describing two unrelated things without words like or as. Figurative language is usually used in literary works such as a novel, short stories, and poetry. However, metaphors also can be found easily in daily life. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the metaphor translation strategies and is the most used strategy by the translator in a novel written by J. K. Rowling entitled Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire along with its Indonesian version Harry Potter dan Piala Api, translated by Listiana Srisanti. This research involved English (SL) and Indonesian (TL). The translation strategies used by the researcher to analyze are taken from Larson (1984), which has five strategies in total, metaphor may be kept if the receptor language permits, metaphor may be translated as simile, metaphor of the receptor language which has the same meaning may be substituted, metaphor may be kept, and the meaning explained. The metaphor’s meaning may be translated without keeping the metaphorical imagery. Nevertheless, there are only three metaphor strategies used by the translator in this novel, with the most used is metaphor’s meaning may be translated without keeping the metaphorical imagery.
