The Benefits Of Using Online Games In Learning English As A Foreign Language

Abstract

Online games can be a tool for learning aspects of the English language. According to Ashrafa, Motlagh, Salamic (2014) finding, online games can be an effective tool for vocabulary acquisition. This study is ready to find out what benefits and aspects of English you can get when playing online games. A qualitative method was used with semistructured interview questions to 10 participants from the Faculty of Social and Communication Sciences, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, Batch 2018. The first result showed that the most played online game genre were First-Person Shooter (FPS), Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA), strategy game, battle royal game, and then followed by the Life Simulation Game and Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG). The second result showed that the most learned English skills while playing online games were vocabulary and speaking skills, followed by listening, writing, reading, and grammar. Last, the third result showed that the benefits of online games in terms of learning experience for learning English that most participants get was that games become practical learning tools. Online games can also be an interactive and fun learning tool. There were also participants who felt that the game was an interesting and possible tool to learn English incidentally.
