Abstract: Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world in 2020, a considerable literature has grown up around the theme of online language learning including in EFL context. This study aims to contribute to this growing area of research by exploring the students’ perception in an EFL online speaking class at a pre-service EFL teacher training program in Central Java, Indonesia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 students from two online speaking classes. Analyzed using thematic analysis, results from the interviews reveal that although students were excited about the new experience of having to speak online, they admitted that they felt it was also an awkward experience. Internet connection and technology use are the most common problems encountered which include the operation of the online platform. Tiredness and Boredom were also identified as problems along with the fear of making mistakes. This study found a mixed response among participants indicating role-play, discussion, and the use of social media as both their most and least favorite activities in an online speaking class.
