Down syndrome is a condition that occurs when the fetus is still in the womb due to a genetic mutation on chromosome 21. Parental acceptance of a child with Down syndrome is important to maximize the growth and development of the child. This study aims to describe the process of parental acceptance of children with Down syndrome in the Kurra District South Sulawesi. This study used a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach and the participants in this study were two pairs of parents who had children with Down syndrome. Data was collected by using interview and observation techniques. The results of this study indicate that every married couple experiences the same process of acceptance of children with Down syndrome. The first participant pair experienced shock, sadness and acceptance. Meanwhile, the second participant pair directly experienced the acceptance phase. The acceptance of the two pairs of participants was marked by the following four characteristics, namely an understanding of the child's strengths and weaknesses, having a realistic view of the child, the existence of an effort or effort in finding solutions to help the child's development and being able to fulfill the love, affection and reasonable protection for the child. One of the factors that help participants through the acceptance process is the existence of religious values. |
