The Process of Learning to Teach English Online During the Pandemic of Covid-19 at SD Inpres Vim 1 Kotaraja

Abstract

The pandemic of COVID-19 changed the educational system all over the world, including Indonesia. The implementation of online learning brings some impacts for the teachers in conducting their classes. This study investigated the obstacles faced by the teachers at SD INPRES VIM 1 Kotaraja, Jayapura Papua, during the online English teaching progress. The participants of this study were four English teachers in the school who had the experience in teaching both offline and online. The data were taken from the interview sessions. The analyzed data were divided into two categories supported by the evidence from the interviews. The results of this study showed that there are several main obstacles that disrupt the teaching progress, such as, the poor internet connection, teacher’s lack of proficiency in operating online platforms, the difficulty in assessing students’ real ability and the gadget ownership. Several strategies are also used by teachers to overcome the obstacles, such as, the use of simple and easy-to-use application, teamwork between teachers, and the use of visual-aids. This study has the implication as an insight for English teachers at the elementary level to deal with online learning regulation.
