A Study of Translation Strategies from English into Indonesian on Sarcasm as A Satirical Device in The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck

Abstract

Sarcasm is one of the author’s language styles to mock or criticize the readers. Therefore, it is important to render the sarcasm into the target language in order to maintain the author’s messages and ideas to the readers. This study is conducted to find which translator strategies were es applied by the translator using Broeder’s translation strategies. This research was conducted using the descriptive qualitative method whereas the data analysis will be depicted in the form of explanation words or sentences. The researcher will also add sample data in each translation strategy to strengthen the analysis and give proof to the reader. The results showed that out of 96 data, 4 sarcasm apply direct translation, 75 sarcasms apply equivalent translation, 5 apply substitution strategies, 11 sarcasms apply explication translation strategies, and one sarcasm apply omission. Those strategies produce translations that can maintain but also can remove the author’s sarcasm that he uses to mock, hurt, and criticize. However, most of the translations can maintain the SL’s sarcasm. These strategies will produce a proper translation if uses in a specific context.
