Translation Strategies Used in The Enola Holmes I’s Subtitle

Abstract

This study entitled Translation Strategies Used in Enola Holmes I’s Subtitles. This research aims to discover the strategies Gottlieb used in translating English subtitles into Indonesian. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method because it focuses on understanding the subtitling phenomenon, and the existing data is analyzed through its form. The data to be analyzed are the subtitles in the falling action and resolution sections that last 20 minutes and 45 seconds. The results show that 9 out of 10 existing subtitling strategies are used. The subtitles did not use any dislocation subtitling strategy. The results show that there are 56 transfer strategies (30.43%), 34 resignation strategies (18.47%), 24 condensation strategies (13.04%), 21 expansion strategies (11.41%), 20 paraphrase strategies (10.86%), 12 deletion strategies (6.52%), 4 transcription strategies (2.17%), and 3 decimation strategies (1.63%). The dislocation strategy is not used because the movie has no musical elements. Meanwhile, the transfer strategy was used frequently, focusing on complete and precise translation. It tries not to add or subtract word by word to translate everything literally without adding or subtracting any meaning or semantic value.
