An Analysis of Idiom Translation Strategies in "The Rainbow Troops" Translated by Angie Kilbane

Abstract

Language is a complex thing, as can be seen from the types of figures of speech itself, one of which is idioms. Cultural differences in each country make idioms different from one country to another, so this is the task of the translator. The translator must use a bridge so that messages from the Source Text can be correctly conveyed to the Target Text without changing the meaning. This bridge is called strategy. The study aims to analyze the type, strategies used and how the strategy deals with the meaning equivalence in translating idioms. The researcher used Fernando theories to classify the type of idiom, and Baker theories to analyze strategy used in translating the idioms. This analysis process was carried out by the researcher by conducting close reading with the help of several idiom dictionaries to collect data and solve the main problems in this study. Then, the researchers found several data which is 65 samples collected that applied three types of idiom, they were 1 pure idiom, 35 semi-type idioms, and 29 literal idioms.
