Slang is unconventional words or phrases that express either something new or something old in a new way (Encyclopedia Britannica). Slang is usually not found in English dictionaries because each region has a different slang. There are five different types of slang, fresh and creative type, flippant type, imitative type, acronym type, and clipping type (Allan and Burridge). The function of slang is so that people can get closer to each other. There are seven functions of slang, to address, to form an intimate atmosphere, to initiate relaxed conversation, to show impression, to show intimacy, to reveal anger, and to humiliate (Hymes 1989).
