Authors: Purba, Richard Putra
Keywords: online academic listening class;listening problems;listening strategies
Issue Date: May-2023
Abstract: Listening is one of the most important foundations in communicating in English. The listening used in universities, workshops, and conferences is academic listening. However, when studying English, students encounter various problems; especially when students enter online academic listening classes. Therefore, what problems students face will be discussed in this study. The participants in the study were students from the 2020 batch of ELE-SWCU. The data of the study were collected using quantitative data (closed-ended questionnaires) and supported by qualitative data (semi-structured interviews). The findings in the study revealed that in participating in online academic listening classes, students would encounter various problems such as difficulty in accents and pronunciation, vocabulary, concentration, and internet connection problems. Moreover, the study also shows how students overcome problems. In summary, students had to solve the problems they face in online academic listening classes, such as increasing vocabulary, listening exercises, training focus, and finding a location with a good internet connection.
