Metaphor Analysis and Their Translation Procedure Found in Novel "A Walk to Remember" By Nicholas Sparks

Abstract

This research aims to find out what types of metaphors are found in the novel A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks. In addition to analyzing the types of metaphors, the main purpose of this study is to analyze the metaphors translation procedures by referring to Newmark’s theory. In conducting this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The data collection techniques in this research are using close reading and note-taking techniques. After collecting data, the researcher classified the metaphors found in the novel, including its types. By using the theoretical basis from Newmark, the collected data is analyzed how the translation procedure is. In this novel, there are four types of metaphor and four translation procedures found, both of which are based on Newmark’s theory (1988). Because metaphors have complex meanings, so translating them is also more difficult. Therefore, to find out the procedures for translating metaphors, the researcher interested in discussing this study.
