The Use of Molina and Albir's Technique in Translating Visual Imagery by Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and its translation "Lukisan Dorian Gray"

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyse the translation techniques as a tool for translating imagery in The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. This study aims to explore the types of imagery and the translation techniques used by translators when translating imagery. Imagery involves forming mental images using language, where words describe experiences that elicit real sensations or physical perceptions. The research method used in this study is qualitative. The data was collected by reading all pages of the novel extensively, and carefully, and paying attention to every line. This study uses Perrine and Arps’ (1992) theory of imagery along with Molina and Albir’s (2002) Translation Techniques. Among all the 38 data that were found, the most common techniques that are used is literal techniques. On the contrary, the other three namely the borrowing technique, particularization and reduction technique are only used once in this novel.
