Abstract: | This study investigates the influence of teacher roles on students’ speaking performance (i.e., willingness to communicate and reluctance to speak) from the students' perspective. The research aims to understand how various aspects of teacher involvement, such as feedback, encouragement, and classroom management, contribute to students’ development in speaking skills. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 10 2023 batch students of Faculty Languange and Arts, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, and individual interviews with five of them. The findings revealed that students perceived their teachers as pivotal in enhancing their speaking abilities, primarily through constructive feedback and motivational support. The study concludes that the teacher’s role is integral to shaping students’ speaking performance, suggesting that teacher training programs should emphasize effective feedback and encouragement strategies. These findings are consistent with prior research highlighting the importance of teacher-student interactions in language acquisition. |
