Abstract: | This study aims to investigate the university ELEP students’ perceptions of the rewriting stage in Academic Writing classes. This study used a qualitative approach. The participants of this study were the students of batch 2020 and 2021 of the English Language Education program of the Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW) who have already taken and passed the Academic Writing class. This study used an open-ended questionnaire to obtain factual data about the students’ perceptions toward prewriting activities. Also, semistructured interviews were conducted to gain more detailed information. The result ofthis study
showed that there were three prewriting activities experienced by the students, namely choosing a topic, brainstorming, and outlining. Moreover, they also perceived the prewriting stage as beneficial, including creating a starting point for writing, assisting students in organizing ideas, supporting students’ ideas development, and advancing students to write more efficiently and coherently in essay writing. Besides, there were challenges of prewriting activities that the ELEP students faced such as difficulties in choosing the topic and lack of ideas during the prewriting stage. The study concluded that the prewriting stage is essential to support students in writing academic essays. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki persepsi mahasiswa ELEP universitas terhadap tahap penulisan ulang dalam kelas Academic Writing. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Partisipan dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa angkatan 2020 dan 2021 program Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW) yang telah mengambil dan lulus mata kuliah Academic Writing. Penelitian ini menggunakan kuesioner terbuka untuk mendapatkan data faktual tentang persepsi mahasiswa terhadap kegiatan prewriting. Selain itu, wawancara semiterstruktur juga dilakukan untuk mendapatkan informasi yang lebih rinci. Hasil dari penelitian ini Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada tiga kegiatan prewriting yang dialami oleh mahasiswa, yaitu memilih topik, brainstorming, dan membuat kerangka. Selain itu, mereka juga merasakan manfaat dari tahap prewriting, termasuk menciptakan titik awal untuk menulis, membantu siswa dalam mengorganisir ide, mendukung pengembangan ide siswa, dan membantu siswa untuk menulis lebih efisien dan koheren dalam menulis esai. Selain itu, terdapat tantangan dalam kegiatan prapenulisan yang dihadapi oleh siswa ELEP seperti kesulitan dalam memilih topik dan kurangnya ide selama tahap prapenulisan. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa tahap prapenulisan sangat penting untuk mendukung siswa dalam menulis esai akademik. |
