Students' Perception Towards the Use of PowerPoint Media for English Language Learning

Abstract

This study was conducted to explore students' perceptions towards lecturers' use of PowerPoint media in English language learning in content classes. The study aims to find out how effective PowerPoint is at increasing students' engagement and comprehension. The study used a mixed-methods approach, involving 30 students from the English Language Education Program, Faculty of Language and Arts, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, Salatiga. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaire consisted of 18 closed-ended questions and 2 open-ended questions, while interviews were conducted with five students to explore their perceptions and experiences more deeply. The questionnaire data was analyzed quantitatively using Google Forms and Microsoft Excel, while the interview data was analyzed qualitatively by identifying frequently emerging themes from the interview transcripts. The results showed that the majority of students have positive perceptions towards the use of PowerPoint, especially in improving students' memory, understanding of the material, and interactive learning. However, its effectiveness is highly dependent on the presentation design and the lecturer's use of multimedia elements. The findings highlight the need for increased use of visual and attractive elements in PowerPoint presentations to maximize its benefits in the context of English language learning. This study provides recommendations for lecturers to be more creative and innovative in designing PowerPoint presentations to improve the quality of learning.
