Abstract: Warak Ngendog yang pada mulanya merupakan mainan anak-anak hasil perpaduan etnis Jawa, Cina, dan Arab, seiring dengan berjalannya waktu menjadi karya seni rupa sebagai bentuk relasi-interaksi agama-budaya yang dimaknai sebagai simbol keagamaan, simbol seni sekaligus simbol akulturasi yang identik dengan tradisi Dugderan di kota Semarang. Dugderan merupakan tradisi keagamaan umat Islam yang diadakan untuk menyambut bulan suci Ramadan. Tesis ini menyoroti kemunculan Warak Ngendog saat arak-arakan dan kirab Karnaval Seni Budaya dalam rangka perayaan Paskah kota Semarang 2016. Melalui penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan metode purposive non-random sampling, tulisan ini mencoba mengumpulkan data yang kemudian dianalisis melalui teori simbol Ernst Cassire, pandangan relasi teologi-budaya Richard Niebuhr dan teori integrasi sosial Talcott Parsons. Tujuan penulisan tesis ini adalah untuk mendalami fungsi, peran dan makna Warak Ngendog dalam Karnaval Paskah 2016. Beberapa hal yang dapat dikemukakan sebagai poin-poin penting yang perlu dicermati adalah bahwa Warak Ngendog mempunyai peran baru sebagai simbol integrasi sosial yang bergandengan dengan makna inkulturasi sebagai sarana penghayatan iman dalam Karnaval Paskah. Peran dan makna tersebut dapat berfungsi jika dan hanya jika manusia sebagai aktor voluntaristik melakukan aksi sosial yaitu gestur sebagai simbol signifikan. Meski penelitian kualitatif ini tidak dapat digeneralisasikan ke dalam populasi, namun fenomena ini dapat menjadi sumbangsih awal sebagai faktor pendukung integrasi sosial dalam masyarakat multikultural terutama kota Semarang. Integrasi sosial itu sendiri dapat tercipta dengan keterlibatan elemen struktural pemerintah, struktural masyarakat, kontrak moral terhadap nilai-nilai dan adanya pemeliharaan pola/latency.
Warak Ngendog in which was originally in a form of children’s toy as a result of Javanese, Chinese and Arabic’s ethnic blending, as the time goes by become works of art of religious-cultural interaction’s form which were interpreted as religious symbol, art symbol, as well as acculturation symbol, being identical into Semarang’s religious tradition, Dugderan. Dugderan is Muslim’s religious tradition which is held to welcoming the holy month, Ramadan. This thesis highlighting the emergence of Warak Ngendog during the procession and carnival of the Arts and Culture Carnival in order to celebrate the Easter of Semarang City 2016. Through descriptive qualitative research with a purposive non-random sampling method, this paper tries to collect data then analyzed through the theory of The Symbol by Ernst Cassire, the view of theological-cultural relation by Richard Niebuhr and Talcott Parson’s social integration theory. The aims of the study are to explore the function, role and meaning of Warak Ngendog in the 2016 Semarang Easter Carnival. Several statements which can be noted as important points as a results are that Warak Ngendog has a new role as a symbol of social integration that goes hand in hand with the meaning of inculturation as a means of appreciation of faith in the Easter Carnival. The role and meaning goes well by the function if only humans take part as a voluntary actors and take action which is called gesture as a significant symbol. Hereby, although this qualitative research cannot be generalized into population, but this phenomenon can be the supporting factor as an early contribution for social integration issue in multicultural societies, especially in Semarang city. The social integration itself can be created by the involvement of elements such as structural government, structural society, moral contracts with values and maintenance pattern / latency.
