In order to teach English for young learners, especially when teaching reading to elementary school students in rural areas teachers should use appropriate techniques. Differences in level of study, information, and educational background knowledge of the students become the reason for teachers to select and use the good techniques. This study aimed to describe the techniques of teaching reading in rural elementary schools located in Kecamatan Suruh. The research participants were five English teachers from five different schools in Kecamatan Suruh. The data were collected using an observation and a semi-structured interview. The results of this study show four different techniques used by the teachers in teaching reading to their students. The reasons for using the techniques were also presented in this study.
