Abstract: This study examines the habitus of the Ngronggo community in utilizing economic opportunities arising from the presence of the Ngronggo Final Waste Disposal Site (TPA). The findings reveal that this habitus is formed through an ongoing dialectic between social structures and the practical actions of the community, which are continuously reproduced through their social experiences. The social structures in question include their socio-economic conditions and the existence of the TPA as a social space that shapes individuals’ ways of thinking, feeling, and acting. The transformation of habitus is evident in how the community internalizes and adapts to new socio-economic conditions, viewing waste not merely as refuse but as an economic resource. This transformation cannot be separated from the dynamics of Pierre Bourdieu’s four forms of capital: economic, social, cultural, and symbolic. Despite limited economic and formal cultural capital, waste pickers develop specific cultural capital in the form of practical knowledge about waste sorting and social capital through networks with fellow waste pickers and collectors. These findings demonstrate that the Ngronggo community is not a passive group resigned to socio-economic hardship but active agents capable of forming new ways of life in accordance with their environment as a society living in close proximity to waste. |
