Authors: Kusuma, Bernardus Angjaya
Keywords: audio-visual;hyperbole;readability;subtitle strategies
Issue Date: 23-Feb-2025
Abstract: Hyperbole expression is often found in the movie’s subtitle to emphasize a character's emotions and personality. However, translating this exaggerated language can result in the loss of meaning or impression and may result in the subtitle being unreadable. This study aims to analyze the translation of the hyperbole using Gottlieb's subtitle strategies and readability. This study was conducted using a qualitative research method. The analysis reveals that the translator uses 5 of Gottlieb’s 10 subtitle strategies. The most frequently used subtitle strategy is paraphrasing and transfer, probably because it preserves the figurative language and maintains its form in the target language. The readability resulted in the subtitle being very readable, scoring 2,91. The viewer can easily understand the translation of the hyperbole found in the subtitle, and the pacing of the subtitle is enough for it to be viewed without any difficulty.
