Abstract: This study aims at finding out the language learning strategies including metacognitive strategy, affective strategy and social strategy that are mostly used by the first year English Department students in learning English. This study adopts quantitative approach to identify percentage of the language strategy that were mostly used by the first year English Depatment students to develop their new English vocabulary. Questionnaires were used to collect the data from the sixty (60) participants of the first year students. This study also used qualitative data by interviewing ten (10) participants randomly to follow up the finding data. The results showed that their (1) metacognitive strategy is characterized by learning English from the mistake that they had made and try to think in English way. (2) affective strategy is mostly implemented in learning new vocabulary while listening to English music, (3) social strategy highly is affected by the culture of native speakers of English that can encourage student to learn new vocabulary
