dc.description.abstractWater sources for agricultural production in rainfed land based on the rainfall. Therefore, information on potential available soil water storage is needed on water management in rainfed land. Fluctuations in the available soil water from month to month can be determined by using a water balance approach between the magnitude of the rainfall, the soil’s ability to store water and the potential vapotranspiration. Through the water balance analysis can determined amount (mm) and time of water surplus and deficit in the soil, so that it can determine the planting time and irrigation provision. Therefore, the research objective to determine the available soil water (surplus and deficit soil water) in the rainfed land using the water balance concept. Research methods for water balance analysis using Java NRCS Newhall Simulation Model (jNSM). The results of the soil water balance analysis mapped the geographic information system (GIS) in order to know which districts have experienced a period of water deficit and surplus. The study was conducted in March-June 2016 for 11 districts in Boyolali. The results showed the amount of annual rainfall in the district of Boyolali greater than potential evapotranspiration, so that in total annual a water surplus in soil by 1128.38 mm / year. Shows the average monthly rainfall in June-Jul, August-September is lower than potential evapotranspiration, so the month of June, July-Aug-September there was a water deficit region Boyolali. Based on the condition of deficit and surplus water in soil per month then the design of cropping patterns in Boyolali are: 1). Rice planting season 1st (first) could begin in October/November to January/February. 2). Rice planting season 2th (second) or pulses can be started in January/February to May/June. 3). The land will experience water deficit in June/July/August/September, so in this period of potential for fallow landen_US
