Abstract: Motivation plays an important role for the students in language learning. However, the study about motivation have not been discussed adequacy. This study aimed to investigate the level of the fresh year students’ motivation based on instrumental and integrative motivation. This study is a replicate study from Kitjaroonchai (2012). The data were collected from 40 fresh year students of the English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Language and Literature, Satya Wacana Christian University (ED-SWCU), majoring in English Language Education Program (ELE Program). The instruments used for the data collections are a set of adapted questionnaire from Gardner (1985) Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) edited by Kitjaronchai (2012). The findings showed that the students have high motivation in learning English. The finding revealed that the students had slightly higher instrumental motivation rather than integrative motivation in learning English as their second language. This happened because the students’ motivation was affected by their environment.
