Title: The SMPN 7 Salatiga Students’ Motivation in English Learning

Abstract: The aim of the study was to find out the students’ motivation in English learning. The subject in this study were 167 students. They were from 8th grade of SMP N 7 Salatiga. It used criterion-based sampling. The researcher used a likert scale questionnaire and close-ended questionnaire. There were 17 items of questionnaire which were divided into 4 sections based on the types of motivations. Integrative motivation had 5 items, Instrumental motivation had 3 items, Extrinsic motivation had 5 items, and Intrinsic motivation had 4 items. It helped the students learn English well based on the students’ motivation. The types of motivation were integrative motivation, instrumental motivation, extrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation. The result of the study showed that the students have strong intrinsic motivation to learn English. Based on the result, the participant had not been know that by learning English, they can get higher salary and appreciation from their partner. The teacher should give explanation or input positive about the benefit of learning English.
