Abstract: This research was done to investigate the challenges faced by English Language Education program students in Academic Listening course and the strategies they used to deal with it. It came from an idea of most students who did not pass this class and repeated the class more than once. To find out the answers, an interview method was employed in this study. Ten participants from 2015 batches in Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana were involved. The result showed that the highest three of the challenges faced by the students in this course were speech rate, vocabularies, and lack of concentration. Therefore to cope with these difficulties, there were six listening strategies used by the students. Those six listening strategies were cognitive strategies, meta-cognitive strategies, memory-related strategies, compensatory strategies, affective strategies, and social strategies. However, the finding showed metacognitive strategies was used mostly by the students than other listening strategies. Finally, through this research, it is expected the result from this finding can help the learners to discover the learning strategies that suitable that the challenges they have.
